A YEAR OF CYCLING FOR EVERYONE
Join us for 12 months of cycling programmes, events, workshops and classes designed to help children, young people and adults build confidence on two wheels.
From balance bikes and learn to ride classes to family rides, BMX coaching and track cycling, there's something for every age, ability and experience level.
Running from September 2026 to August 2027 in schools, at the Glasgow Life BMX Centre, and at Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, the Year of Cycling gives children aged 3–16 the opportunity to ride and learn at Scotland's world class cycling facilities.
Working with funders and collaborating with cycling communities around the city, our goal is simple: to create Glasgow's most accessible cycling pathway, helping hundreds of children, young people and families discover the confidence, skills and freedom that comes from riding a bike.
Learning to ride a bike is just the beginning! Children need opportunities to develop the skills, confidence and physical literacy to become capable cyclists which is why we have a pathway for all young riders to drop into and move along whatever their age or ability. Our year of cycling initiative aims to provide cycling progress and diversify the cycling talent pathway.
They can start by learning to ride, build confidence through Bikers Club, try BMX, experience the Velodrome and eventually discover racing or simply continue cycling for fun, fitness and everyday life.

Develop essential balance and coordination skills to lay the foundation for a smooth and natural transition to pedal bikes when they’re ready.

For Riders who are P4+ and can stand on pedals
The Bandits is a club for BMX riders who want to regularly practice on the BMX track and compete in races. Children must be assessed by coaches before joining a bandit session to make sure they are skilled enough to stay safe on the track.

For children who can ride a bike
Build bike confidence, control and skills through games, challenges and ramps and even a shot on the BMX track.

Meet Rock Up And Ride
A Scottish Cycling initiative delivered by Movement Park, Rock Up And Ride brings BMX into Glasgow primary and secondary schools, giving P4 - P7 and S1 - S4 pupils the opportunity to build bike skills, confidence and physical literacy, and discover where cycling could take them next.
It's free for Glasgow schools and surrounding areas. Following the school programme, pupils who take part will be invited to access free cycling programmes in the city, creating a clear pathway from learning at school to continuing to ride, develop and achieve in the community.
If your school would like to join the Year of Cycling initiative and bring Rock Up And Ride to your school you can download the Rock Up And Ride school information pack or contact kirsty.mitchell@movementpark.org.uk directly.

What will children get from cycling?
Physical literacy and social mobility.
Cycling is about much more than learning to ride a bike. At Movement Park, we work with funders and supporters to diversify the cycling talent pathways by removing financial barriers for children and your people to experience cycling, giving them opportunities they might not otherwise have access to.
We also use cycling to help children develop physical literacy - the skills, confidence, understanding and positive experiences that help them enjoy movement and stay active throughout their lives.
We look at physical literacy through four connected areas: MOVE, THINK, FEEL and CONNECT. Through cycling, children MOVE as they develop balance, coordination, bike handling, braking and turning skills. They THINK as they make decisions, respond to challenges, understand risk and become aware of the space around them. They FEEL as they build confidence, independence, resilience, motivation and enjoyment. And they CONNECT by learning alongside others, communicating, supporting each other and experiencing inclusion and teamwork. Together, these experiences help children develop not just as cyclists, but as confident, capable and active young people.
And lets not forget, bikes are good for your heart, your lungs, your legs - and your brain. They’re stress-reducing, mood-boosting machines. When screen time is up and movement is down, cycling offers a low-cost way to build healthier habits. Teaching kids to ride isn’t just about getting from A to B. It’s about giving them a tool for life. Cycling encourages movement, independence, and resilience from an early age. It sets the tone for a more active lifestyle, not just in childhood, but far beyond.
